We are MTIC

• Ours is a region of many opportunities, but we also face a unique mix of challenges - one of these is low attainment in mathematics
• Not only does a good level of maths play a key role in the mastery of other subjects: technology, all the sciences, music and art, but it is fundamental to participation in the economy and to every one of our key North East growth sectors
• Work over the years by schools, colleges and others to address low attainment has seen us make some progress, but the region still lags behind
• Currently, our ‘pipeline’ of high-attaining mathematicians at GCSE is smaller than nationally, leading to lower uptake and weaker performance at Level 3 and above 
• This growing disparity in maths attainment between the North East and other regions stands in the way of the prosperity we seek for our people and our place 

We seek:

• To help the North East become a high attaining region for maths 
• To increase our collective belief in the importance of maths as well as the enjoyment of being good at it
• To take strategic action - collective, practical and evidence-based 
• To encourage the sharing of expertise and resource across our region

An open and growing voluntary, non-competitive partnership of educationalists, teachers and leaders; businesses and charities; and policymakers 

• Uniquely cross-phase: 

The cross-phase nature of our collaboration sees practitioners from the Early Years through the key stages and including Further and Higher Education, identifying together the actions most likely to make a positive impact

• Committed to high quality evaluation: 

Our approach to evaluation recognises complexity; we are  clear that quantitative metrics, whilst important, are insufficient in evaluating the effectiveness of solutions when the problems being confronted are complex and intersecting
